WCAG 2.1 AA for EduGears AI Assessments

Assessments have to work for every student — with a keyboard, with a screen reader, at high zoom, and in any of the LMS themes they launch inside. Our quiz and practice activities are built and tested to that bar. This statement explains exactly what we conform to, how we verified it, and what is still in progress.

Conformance statement

The EduGears AI Quiz and Practice assessment activities substantially conform to WCAG 2.1 Level AA across all in-scope surfaces, verified across the four supported LMS themes. This is a self-assessment based on automated testing, code review, and keyboard testing — see how we tested below.

What we’ve built in

Grouped by the four WCAG principles — perceivable, operable, understandable, robust.

Perceivable

  • Every image carries alt text and every embedded frame a title — enforced at the sanitizer level, not left to chance.
  • Correct/incorrect results are signalled by an icon, an accessible name, and a border — never by color alone.
  • All text meets a 4.5:1 contrast ratio across all four LMS themes, including the dark Blackboard theme.
  • Math is rendered with parallel MathML so screen readers and braille displays announce formulas correctly.
  • Layout reflows cleanly at 320px width and at 200% browser zoom without loss of content.

Operable

  • Every quiz interaction is fully keyboard-operable — Tab, Shift+Tab, arrow keys for choice groups, Space and Enter.
  • A visible 3px focus ring appears on every interactive element in every theme.
  • A skip link is the first focusable element, letting keyboard and screen-reader users bypass navigation.
  • Each page has a descriptive title and a single, logical heading hierarchy.
  • No keyboard traps, no time limits, and no flashing content.

Understandable

  • Every input has an associated label; choice groups use fieldset and legend for context.
  • Submission errors are announced inline with an icon and clear, actionable text.
  • Navigation and iconography stay consistent across every assessment screen.
  • Nothing changes context unexpectedly on focus or input.

Robust

  • Controls use native semantics — real buttons, radios, and tables — so assistive technology reports name, role, and value correctly.
  • Score banners and per-question results use aria-live regions, so screen readers announce changes without stealing focus.
  • Matching grids use table semantics with captions and row/column headers.

How we tested

  • Automated testing with axe-core across 7 assessment routes × 4 LMS themes (28 surfaces) — zero serious or critical violations.
  • eslint-plugin-jsx-a11y runs in our build pipeline and is clean for every in-scope file.
  • Manual code review against every applicable WCAG 2.1 Level A and AA success criterion.
  • Keyboard-only and real-browser walkthroughs launched from a live Moodle LTI activity, end to end through multiple-choice, open-ended, and matching-grid questions.

Scope & transparency

In scope: the Quiz and Practice assessment activities — both the learner runners and the instructor authoring, submissions, and analytics screens that govern them.

Still in progress: audio-recorded manual screen-reader sessions (NVDA and VoiceOver); the accessibility tree has been inspected as a proxy and matches expectations. We do not yet have an independent third-party VPAT on file — it is available to scope on request.

Not claimed: Level AAA or WCAG 2.2 conformance. Other product surfaces beyond quiz and practice are being brought to the same standard and are not yet covered by this statement.

Which parts of EduGears AI meet WCAG 2.1 AA?

Our Quiz and Practice assessment activities — the learner-facing runners and the instructor authoring screens that govern them — substantially conform to WCAG 2.1 Level AA, verified across the Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, and Brightspace themes. Other product surfaces are being brought to the same standard and are not yet covered by this statement.

What does "substantial conformance" mean?

We conform to every applicable Level A and AA success criterion, verified by internal code review, automated axe-core testing in CI, and keyboard testing. "Substantial" reflects that a small amount of external manual verification — audio-recorded screen-reader sessions — is still outstanding. We do not claim Level AAA or WCAG 2.2 conformance.

Do you have a VPAT or third-party audit?

We maintain a detailed internal WCAG 2.1 AA conformance report and can share it on request. We do not yet have an independent third-party VPAT on file; if your procurement process requires one, contact us at support@edugears.ai and we can scope that work.

How do standards like Section 508, the EAA, and the ADA relate to this?

WCAG 2.1 Level AA is the technical baseline referenced by Section 508 (US federal), EN 301 549 (the standard behind the European Accessibility Act), and commonly cited in ADA-related guidance. Conforming to WCAG 2.1 AA is how we align our assessments with those frameworks.
