Turn a PDF or Last Year's Test into a Graded Moodle Quiz — Straight from Claude

A paper document on the left flowing as a stream of small glowing cards into a tidy stacked quiz panel on the right, on a dark slate background with indigo and teal highlights — flat vector shapes, no legible text

Ask a teacher how many good quiz questions they have and the honest answer is usually "hundreds". They are in last year's unit test, a worksheet from a colleague, a scanned paper from before the school moved to Moodle. The questions are already written. What stops them from becoming a Moodle quiz is the copying: open the quiz editor, add a question, paste the stem, type each option, mark the right one, repeat forty times.

The retyping problem

Retyping is slow, and it is where mistakes creep in. A correct answer gets ticked on the wrong option. A fraction turns into plain text. A short-answer question loses the accepted spellings. By the time the quiz is built, the teacher has spent more time on data entry than on teaching. That is why so many good tests never make it online.

How it works

If you use Claude, you can connect it to EduGears AI in about two minutes. After that, Claude can create quizzes directly in your Moodle course through the EduGears AI tool. The steps are simple:

  1. Open Claude and attach the file: a PDF, a Word export, or a photo of a printed test.
  2. Tell Claude what you want, for example: "Turn this into a quiz in my Year 9 Biology course. Keep my questions, add a short explanation for each answer, pass mark 60%, two attempts."
  3. Claude reads the file, asks EduGears AI which formats it accepts, creates the quiz and adds your questions to it.
  4. Claude tells you what it created and where. The quiz is waiting in your EduGears AI library inside that Moodle course.

Claude does the reading and writing on your own Claude plan. EduGears AI does the part a chat window can't: it stores the quiz properly, renders the questions for students (maths included), and sends scores back to your Moodle gradebook once you publish it.

What carries over from your file

  • All five question types: multiple choice, multiple select, true/false, short answer and essay.
  • Your wording. Ask Claude to keep your questions as written and it will. Ask it to tidy them up and it will do that instead.
  • Answer keys and explanations. If your file has an answer key, Claude uses it. If not, Claude can propose answers for you to check.
  • Quiz settings you mention, such as pass mark and number of attempts.

Good to know: this creates an EduGears AI quiz inside your Moodle course, not an entry in Moodle's own question bank. Students take it in the course like any other activity, and the score goes to the Moodle gradebook.

Check it before students see it

Everything Claude creates arrives as a draft in your EduGears AI library. Students see nothing until you place the quiz in your course yourself, using the same picker you already use. That gives you a review step for the things worth checking: an answer key Claude had to infer, a diagram question that needs the image re-attached, or a scanned page that was hard to read.

The connection is narrow on purpose. Claude can read your courses and create content in them. It cannot see student work, submissions or grades, and you can disconnect it at any time.

Setting it up

  1. Open EduGears AI from a Moodle course you teach and select Course Settings. Under Connect your AI assistant, copy the server URL.
  2. In Claude, add a custom connector with that URL.
  3. Claude opens the EduGears AI sign-in page. Back in Course Settings, select Get a pairing code, enter it on the sign-in page under I'm a teacher, and select Connect.

The connector is switched on per organization while we onboard the first schools. If it isn't on for yours yet, ask us and we will enable it.

Can Claude read a scanned or photographed test?

Usually, yes. Claude reads PDFs and images, including scans and phone photos. Clear, upright pages work best. Faint or handwritten pages are worth a closer look when you review the draft.

Does it work with Canvas too?

Yes. The connector works the same way with the EduGears AI tool in Canvas. This post uses Moodle as the example.

What about questions with diagrams?

Claude carries over the question text. Images in your file are not attached automatically, so re-add a diagram when you review the draft, or rewrite the question so it doesn't need one.

Which Claude plans support connectors?

Custom connectors are available on Claude's paid plans. If you don't see the option to add a connector, check with whoever manages your Claude account.
